When people discover a vehicle has been titled Theft Recovered, they often have questions on what that means for the vehicle they are considering and most importantly, they wonder… should you buy a theft recovered vehicle? Here, we’ll hit the most commonly asked questions so each individual can feel armed with facts versus rumors they’ve heard to determine for themselves if a theft recovered vehicle is right for them.

What is a Theft Recovered Vehicle?

There were an estimated 748,841 motor vehicles stolen in 2018 according to the FBI, which breaks down to an automobile theft occurring once every 42.2 seconds throughout the United States. With all of those vehicles being stolen, it’s estimated that approximately 60% will be recovered. Once a vehicle has been theft recovered, it may be deemed with a Theft Recovered salvage title.

Are all stolen vehicles given a salvaged title?

There are a few factors insurance companies use to determine if a theft recovered vehicle will be given a salvage title and the owner of the vehicle to receive a payment for the loss of their vehicle. These can include:

  • Time – Insurance companies have their own length of time that they will allow a vehicle to be searched for before deeming it a “complete loss” and issuing the owner a check and can vary from two weeks to thirty days. Based on the policy of the insurance company regarding the stolen vehicle’s title, the title could stay CLEAN or converted into a salvage title.
  • Damage – If the vehicle sustained more monetary damage to it than the vehicle is worth.
  • Location – Each state has different laws governing if a vehicle will automatically be deemed a salvage title after it has been stolen despite length of time or lack of monetary damage involved. States that issue a theft recovered vehicle a salvage title are Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma and Oregon regardless of recovery time or lack of damage.

Are Theft Recovered vehicles bad vehicles to purchase?

While the sound of a salvage titled vehicle brings connotations of a busted and broken vehicle to mind, the truth is a lot of these vehicles have little to no damage and lower miles. In fact, buyers can often get a newer vehicle with more options, lower miles and save thousands in the process when they purchase a theft recovered vehicle. This is due to the perceived reduction in value while there actually is none. In addition, these vehicles depreciate slower than their clean titled counterparts because the initial cost is less for a theft recovered vehicle in comparison to the exact same vehicle that has not been stolen.

Can Theft Recovered vehicles be insured or be financed?

A common misconception is that stolen and recovered salvage titled vehicles can not be financed like their clean title counterparts can be but that’s simply not the case. While there may be different loan to value requirements depending on your lender and your credit, it is possible to get both financing AND insurance on theft recovered vehicles.

Should I buy a Theft Recovered Vehicle?

While we’ve discussed the many advantages a buyer can receive from purchasing a theft recovered titled vehicle over a clean titled vehicle, there are still two common fears we hear from people… the seller won’t disclose all of the previous damage and they won’t be able to sell it when they decide to purchase another vehicle.

At Broadmoor Motors, we believe honesty is the best policy for selling any vehicle, regardless of the status of its title, and it’s important to us that we share what damage was done to the vehicle prior to repairs and in letting potential customers know that the title is a stolen recovered salvage beginning with the initial listing and when someone makes an inquiry. In addition, we want our customers to feel confident that they will be able to sell their vehicle when the time comes and that’s why we offer our buy back policy. Since we already know the history of the vehicle, and we also have the original pictures of it when it was sold to us, we are not afraid to stand behind it and will take it as a trade-in for another vehicle of your choice or just buy it back from you even if you buy elsewhere.
